Article 50 of the European regulation on artificial intelligence imposes, as of August 2, 2026, the readable marking of AI-generated content. Aleteia reports a tiny breach in the manufacture of falsehoods.

Context

We had shown, regarding the implementation agreement between Doctolib and an AI provider on health data, how the logic of digital profit was devouring medical consent. The question that arises from August 2, 2026 is different and more radical: how can a reader, a patient, a citizen even know that a text, an image, a voice they receive has been made by a machine? This is the subject of the transparency section of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, known as the AI Act, whose Article 50 becomes applicable on that day.

The Facts

Aleteia (July 28, 2026) reminds us of the deadline: from August 2, 2026, providers of generative AI systems will have to mark all synthetic content in a machine-readable manner, and deployers will have to clearly inform users that a text, image, or voice has been generated or substantially modified by an AI system. Deepfakes must carry an explicit mention. Article 99 of the regulation provides for fines of up to €15 million or 3% of global annual turnover in case of significant breach.

Doctrinal Analysis

Léon XIV, in Magnifica humanitas (March 24, 2026), placed the question of truth as the primary criterion for evaluating AI: all technology must be at the service of truth and the good of the person. The Message of Francis for the World Day of Peace 2024, dedicated to artificial intelligence and peace, already recalled that the machine can manipulate and combine data at an unprecedented level, but it does not produce true interiority or true meaning. Mandatory labeling is the civil extension of an anthropological requirement: the neighbor has the right to the truth of the exchange, lest the word itself lose its function of reliance. Social doctrine, notably Caritas in Veritate (Benedict XVI, 2009, n° 3), reminds us that acting in truth is the foundation of all authentic charity.

Stakes for the Church and the Faithful

Catechists, Catholic journalists, and teachers become frontline actors. The obligation to label will only have an effect if credible institutions teach their interlocutors to read the labels, to spot deepfakes, and to be wary of them. Labeling alone is not enough: the formation of judgment remains Christian.

Critical Reading and Blind Spots

The European regulation only applies to providers active in the Union market. Hostile state actors, Russian or Chinese manipulations will technically escape the obligation. The loophole is tiny and will not deter the manufacture of falsehoods or propaganda. It is a beginning, not a bulwark.

To Ponder and Act

The faithful are invited not to receive any image or audio as immediately true. Allowing oneself to be instructed by the Church on the instruments of discernment is now an act of intellectual mercy.
