"Moderation and discipline": Leon XIV warns Brazilian youth about AI

This message extends the magisterial line opened by the encyclical Magnifica humanitas and complements the warning issued on July 16, 2026 by the Rome Declaration on AI and disarmament.

Our reading (in the light of the magisterium)

We had already noted, in our previous analyses, that Leon XIV does not moralize AI from the outside: he poses the anthropological question. The vocabulary chosen here, "moderation" and "discipline," directly borrows from the classical ascetic tradition. The sobrietas of Proverbs 25:16 and the disciplina of the Fathers are not technical prohibitions: they are virtues. To the generation of "digital natives," the Pope reminds us that a better-trained algorithm does not exempt one from a better-formed soul. The Catechism (no. 2494) states that "the information of these means is a service of the common good" and that "society has a right to information based on truth, freedom, justice, and solidarity." Personal discipline is the only bulwark against the contemporary inversion: man becoming the content, and the machine, the measure. That Leon XIV recalls this requirement in a country where Catholic charismatic fervor is still strong and where the use of networks shapes the imagination of the young is a coherent pastoral choice.
