The Holy See is now closing the canonical loop by publishing, on July 2, the official procedure for returning to full communion for priests and lay faithful linked to the Society of Saint Pius X.

According to Vatican News, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith specifies that excommunication personally affects the consecrating bishops and the consecrated bishops, not all priests and laypeople of the Society. For the latter, the text outlines two paths. Priests validly ordained before the ordinations of June 29 must submit a motivated request to their local Ordinary, profess the Catholic faith, and recognize the Second Vatican Council; their canonical situation will be examined on a case-by-case basis. Laypeople, for their part, are invited to approach their parish priest for pastoral discernment, without incurring automatic penalties.

Doctrinal Analysis

Rome here applies canons 1364 and 1382 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law: latae sententiae excommunication is a medicinal penalty, ordered toward conversion and not definitive exclusion. The Dicastery’s text aligns with Benedict XVI’s Letter to the Bishops of March 10, 2009, which already distinguished the person of the bishops from the question of the Society as a body. The Catechism recalls that “excommunication is the most severe ecclesiastical penalty” (CCC 1463), but that it aims at “the healing of the sinner.” Saint Cyprian of Carthage, in his Letter 73 to Jubaianus, already formulated the patristic axiom Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus, not as a sentence, but as a call to remain in communion.

Stakes for the Church and the Faithful

Three doctrinal lines are established. First, the sacramental validity of prior priestly ordinations is recognized, reassuring faithful attached to the traditional Mass. Second, the profession of the Second Vatican Council is explicitly required, which locks the fundamental question raised by Archbishop Lefebvre. Third, the individual—rather than collective—treatment denies the Society any corporate recognition until the doctrinal question is resolved.

Critical Reading and Blind Spots

The procedure is narrow. Nothing is said about the fate of seminarians in training, nor about the status of the Society’s chapels and real estate. The request for a doctrinal commission put forward by Cardinal Müller remains unanswered. Cardinal Fernández’s call for a “dialogue” finds no institutional translation in this text. The door is open, but it requires individual renunciation—precisely what the SSPX has always refused in the name of fidelity to Tradition. In his Écône homily, Superior General Pagliarani had stated the principle: “We want the faith of the Church to remain in the Church.” This text from the Dicastery confronts each person with their conscience.
