Five days before the consistory of June 30, leaders and theologians from Franciscan universities publish an open letter to the SSPX, echoing the call of the American Franciscan University: the unity of the Church is non-negotiable.
Five days before the extraordinary consistory called by Leo XIV for June 30, two academic voices are adding to the calls for a return to unity. In the United States, professors from the Franciscan University of Steubenville urge the SSPX to renounce anything that might resemble a schismatic approach (CNA, June 25). In Europe, leaders and theologians from Franciscan universities publish an open letter to the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X in the same vein (Le Salon Beige, June 26). These two texts converge: the unity of the Church is non-negotiable, and the doctrinal reasons put forward by the SSPX do not justify separation.
These interventions come from theologically serious circles, attached to Tradition. They are not the work of progressives eager to be done with the SSPX: they come from Catholics who share the liturgical and doctrinal concerns of the Fraternity but refuse to let these legitimate concerns lead to canonical isolation. This is precisely what Lumen Gentium (n. 14) reminds us: "Only he who, possessing the Spirit of Christ, accepts all its organization and all the means of salvation established in it is fully incorporated into the society that is the Church." Communion with the Successor of Peter is not a disciplinary detail: it is a constitutive requirement of the Church.
The SSPX has sent a declaration of faith to the Pope and the cardinals before the consistory. These open letters from Franciscan theologians show that the hand remains outstretched, not out of complacency, but out of charity toward unity. Let us pray that the consistory on June 30 may be an occasion of grace and not of rupture.
- The calls for unity come from circles close to the SSPX’s concerns.
- *Lumen Gentium* 14: full communion requires acceptance of the Church’s visible structure.
- The SSPX’s declaration of faith is a step toward dialogue.
