Nicaragua: UN condemns election suspension announced by Ortega

Two days after Ortega's announcement, the UN condemns the definitive closure of the Sandinista regime. Bishop Mata remains missing.

The fact

We had reported Daniel Ortega's announcement on July 21, 2026, on the occasion of the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution (July 19, 1979): no more elections in Nicaragua. Vatican News in Portuguese publishes on July 23, 2026 the condemnation of the United Nations Organization. Ortega's decision locks the Ortega-Murillo duo at the head of the regime. It comes in a context of ongoing Catholic persecution: Mgr Rolando Álvarez, Bishop of Matagalpa, sentenced to twenty-six years in prison in February 2023 and then expelled to Rome in January 2024; Mgr Juan Abelardo Mata Guevara still missing since June 29, 2026, that is, nearly four weeks. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, seized on July 17, 2026, has received no response from Managua.

Our reading

The suspension of elections is not an accident: it is the climax of a trajectory that began in 2018 with the repression of demonstrations, continued by the closure of religious orders, the expulsion of apostolic nuncios, and the control of parishes. The UN speaks in the language of international law that does not bite; the Vatican, which had recalled its representative in 2022, seems to be running out of diplomatic levers. The Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church recalls that the deprivation of religious freedom is an attack on the dignity of the person. The international silence on the fate of Mgr Mata is the real scandal.

Pray for Mgr Mata Guevara, for the priests imprisoned in Nicaragua, and for the episcopate of Managua forced into silence. Make known: the persecution is structural, silent, and methodical. To watch: the official reaction of Managua, the mobilization of neighboring episcopal conferences (Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama), and a possible new wave of clerical expulsions.
