Nicaragua: the disappearance of Bishop Mata brought before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights

The case of the Bishop of Estelí, briefly detained at the end of June and then placed under surveillance, has reached a new stage: the IACHR has been seized.

The fact

We had followed, at the end of June, the brief detention and then the house arrest imposed on Mgr Abelardo Mata Guevara, emeritus bishop of Estelí, after a mass where he asked for prayers for the persecuted Church. On July 17, 2026, the affair takes on a new diplomatic dimension: the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, an organ of the Organization of American States, demands that the Ortega-Murillo regime immediately inform about the fate of the bishop and guarantee his life and integrity.

Our reading

The intervention of the Inter-American Commission is not an ordinary procedural step. It places the Ortega-Murillo regime on the list of States on the continent suspected of serious violations of fundamental rights, alongside Venezuela and Cuba. It extends the long series of persecutions already documented: Mgr Rolando Álvarez in forced exile to the Vatican, priests arrested, congregations expelled, Catholic schools nationalized. Open Doors includes Nicaragua in its World Watch List 2026 among the States where the Catholic Church is structurally prevented. Aid to the Church in Need makes it one of its emergency centers for Latin America.
