JD Vance, Vice President of the United States and a converted Catholic, is showing his willingness to improve U.S.-Vatican relations. But is he the interlocutor the Holy See is waiting for? [ENCADRE titre="Analysis"] [ENCADRE contenu="While the Biden administration maintained a complex but structured dialogue with the Vatican, the arrival of a new administration raises questions about the future of these relations. JD Vance, known for his conservative positions, could either strengthen ties or create new tensions."]

The Fact

A lengthy article in Crux Now (June 25, 2026) openly raises the question: JD Vance, Vice President of the United States and a Catholic convert since 2019, seeks to improve relations between Washington and the Holy See. His conversion, guided in part by philosopher Peter Thiel, is recent. His proximity to a certain strand of American "national Catholicism" sparks as much enthusiasm in some conservative Catholic circles as it does wariness in others. Crux highlights the question: is he truly the right person to foster this dialogue?

Our Analysis

Diplomatic relations between the United States and the Holy See, fully restored in 1984 under Reagan, remain strategically important for both parties, particularly on issues of international religious freedom, the persecution of Christians, and Middle Eastern geopolitics—three areas where interests converge. That Vance, as a declared Catholic, wishes to be the driving force behind this is understandable. Caution is warranted, however: a Catholic in politics is not automatically a mouthpiece for Church teaching. The Church does not seek political allies but rather interlocutors capable of defending human dignity in arenas where it cannot act directly. It is on this criterion—and not on confessional affiliation—that Vance’s potential role must be judged.

Food for Thought

“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Mt 22:21). The Gospel distinction is not one of indifference but a reminder that the political order, however valuable, does not exhaust the order of truth. May Catholics in politics be the first to be convinced of this.
