These assemblies constitute the next step in the reception phase of the 2023-2024 Synod on synodality. The document specifies the method: community discernment, participation of the laity, articulation with the local episcopal authority, and organized feedback to Rome.

Our reading

The reception phase is the true doctrinal and pastoral test of the synodal process, as several critical cardinals, particularly Burke, Sarah, and Müller, have repeatedly emphasized. Rome asserts its method: synodality, before being a content, is a church exercise framed by canon 447 on episcopal conferences and by the apostolic constitution Episcopalis Communio (Francis, September 15, 2018), which provides for the articulation between local stages and the General Synod. A precise guide aims to contain the improvisation that has weakened certain national paths, notably the German Synodal Path. Cardinal Grech, the general secretary, has insisted since Jakarta on July 23 last on the central role of local Churches: it is precisely at this level that doctrine is translated into church practice, or lost.

The faithful attentive to doctrine is invited to get involved in his diocese when these assemblies are convened. The Roman critique of the synodal path is not enough: it is necessary, in each parish, to bring the voice of the perennial magisterium.
