Léon XIV seen from Peru: the EDAP of Chiclayo as a synodal laboratory

LifeSiteNews looks back at Robert Prevost's pastoral experience in Chiclayo, where he established a diocesan team involving laypeople and women in governance.

The fact

On July 24, 2026, LifeSiteNews publishes an investigation, based on a report from the National Catholic Reporter, about Robert Prevost's pastoral past in the diocese of Chiclayo (Peru), which he governed from 2014 onwards. The document describes the EDAP, the diocesan pastoral animation team, composed of priests, religious, and laypeople, both men and women, presented as a "synodal laboratory." Two female figures are mentioned: Birgit Weiler, a theologian at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, in charge of synodal formation commissions in the parishes, and Gladys Calderón, a lay member of the EDAP. Prevost would have then declared: "laypeople know better how to reach out to laypeople," and, on female responsibilities: "they are prepared just as well as men."

Our reading (in the light of the magisterium)

We had pointed out (#1251) the doctrinal criteria claimed by Cardinal Iannone at the Dicastery for bishops. The exhumation of the Peruvian file outlines, in reverse, the pastoral horizon that Léon XIV intends to prolong. The ridge line is narrow. Christifideles laici n° 23 (John Paul II, 1988) recognizes a true missionary co-responsibility for the laity, and it is not illegitimate for a diocesan formation commission to be led by a theologian. But Ordinatio sacerdotalis (John Paul II, 1994) definitively locks the ordination reserved for men only. The informed reader will retain that the "Chiclayan synodality" does not prejudge a ministerial shift, but that future actions will be worth proving.

The pastoral past of a pope sheds light on his governance. It remains to be seen whether the Chiclayo laboratory will be extended to the universal Church or whether it will remain a local experience, to be discerned with the rigor that doctrine calls for.
