Jakarta: the 12th FABC Assembly gathers Asian bishops around Leo XIV

We had reported on the letter dated July 11, 2026, from Leon XIV to Cardinal Oswald Gracias, the pope's special envoy to the 12th plenary assembly of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC), held in Jakarta from July 20 to 26, 2026. On July 23, 2026, Vatican News in German publishes a status report on the ongoing assembly. The Asian episcopates gather around the programmatic formula of the Holy Father: "builders of communion, not architects of Babel," with an explicit reference to Magnifica humanitas.

Our reading

The FABC, founded in 1970, is not a bishops' conference in the canonical sense (canon 447, CIC 1983): it is an instance of communion and pastoral coordination between the episcopates of the continent. Its 12th assembly takes place at a pivotal moment. The pope sees it as a laboratory for communal synodality, breaking with any temptation of ethno-Catholicism or inculturation with variable geometry. John Paul II, in the apostolic exhortation Ecclesia in Asia (November 6, 1999), recalled that inculturation must always take place in the light of the mystery of Christ and in fidelity to the apostolic faith. The Leonine formula "builders of communion" marks the same path. The assembly must still deliver its doctrinal documents: it will be necessary to evaluate their fidelity to the deposit.
