Iran has just reasserted its unilateral authority over the Strait of Hormuz, putting an end to the technical discussions following the US-Iran agreement. The hoped-for de-escalation is fading. Pierre-Antoine Vasseur recalls what this means for Iran's Christian minorities.
Technical discussions between Iran and the United States, initiated in the wake of the May 2026 agreement, have broken down. Tehran reaffirms its unilateral authority over the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic chokepoint through which approximately 20% of the world's oil transits. La Croix reports that tensions are rising again in the region after a brief lull that had raised hopes of lasting de-escalation.
At the time of the signing of the US-Iran agreement, we had pointed out the legitimate concerns of Iran's Christian minorities—around 800,000 faithful, mostly Armenians and Assyrians, along with Chaldean Catholics—who had hoped that a geopolitical détente would lead to a reduction in the religious pressure exerted on them. This scenario is now receding. The Church's social doctrine (Compendium, no. 499) reminds us that international peace is indivisible: violations of religious freedom almost always accompany political tensions and regimes that opt for external confrontation. Aide à l'Église en Détresse (AED) regularly documents the situation of these communities.
Pray for the Christians of Iran—Armenians, Assyrians, Chaldean Catholics—who live their faith in forced discretion, often at the cost of great sacrifice. Support them concretely through Aide à l'Église en Détresse: aide-eglise-en-detresse.fr.
