Amoris Laetitia relaunched: an October commission to reopen the Chapter VIII file

Rome convenes a meeting on divorce and family pastoral care. The Dubia of Cardinals Brandmüller, Burke, Caffarra, and Meisner remain, ten years later, without a magisterial response.

The Fact

According to Catholic News Agency and La Croix on July 6, 2026, a Vatican meeting, scheduled from October 7 to 14, 2026, will bring together at the Vatican the presidents of the episcopal conferences and the leaders of the Eastern Catholic Churches. It will be dedicated to divorce and family issues. The announced objective is to relaunch the pastoral application of the apostolic exhortation Amoris laetitia (March 19, 2016), which had opened in Chapter VIII a disputed breach on access to the Eucharistic communion of civilly remarried divorcees.

The doctrinal question has never been closed. The Dubia of the four cardinals (Walter Brandmüller, Raymond Burke, Carlo Caffarra, Joachim Meisner) were submitted to Francis and Cardinal Müller on September 19, 2016, and then made public on November 14, 2016. They asked the Pope to clarify five points of Amoris laetitia. They remained without a formal magisterial response. Leo XIV, whose pontificate seeks to unite Tradition and pastoral care, chooses not to decide but to convene a commission. Rome thus avoids a direct doctrinal position, while signaling that the file remains open.

The risk is twofold: either to reproduce previous ambiguities, or to hand over the question to an organ whose composition has not yet been made public. The Catechism (n° 1650) and Familiaris consortio (n° 84, Saint John Paul II, November 22, 1981) nevertheless recall without ambiguity that civilly remarried divorcees cannot be admitted to Eucharistic communion as long as they persist in a situation objectively contrary to the indissolubility of marriage. Any pastoral reform will have to comply with this norm, unless it contradicts a constant magisterial teaching.
